Flexibility from heat pumps

The smarter use of heat pumps and heat grids can, in theory, create a lot of flexible electricity demand.

The smarter use of heat pumps and heat grids can in theory provide a lot of flexible electricity demand: in hours with little renewable electricity, part of the heat systems can temporarily pause and in hours with a lot of electricity from sun and wind, the heat systems can actually provide additional heating. By 2030, this could yield 0.5 to 1 GW of temporary flexibility. For this, water pumps must be able to be controlled intelligently.
