NordLink: Contract signed for subsea cable

Partners TenneT, Statnett and KfW sign contract with Nexans Norway for delivery of subsea cable for the part of the project which is in Norwegian and Danish sectors of the North Sea Bayreuth/Oslo. Nexans is one of the main suppliers to NordLink, the interconnector that will be built between Norway and Germany. Agreement was signed today by Nexans Norway and project partners, TenneT TSO, Norwegian TSO Statnett and German promo-tional bank KfW. NordLink, the “green cable”, is the first direct connection between the German and Norwegian electricity markets. Nexans will manufacture and install HVDC (high voltage direct current) cable for the part of the project which is in Norwegian and Danish North Sea sectors. This is a route of 362 km with two parallel cables (plus/minus poles), and involves delivery of 724 km HVDC cable from the Nexans factory in Halden, Norway. “We look forward to working with Nexans, which we also have worked with over many years in similar projects”, says Executive Vice President Håkon Borgen of Statnett. ABB will manufacture and install corresponding cable in German sector and converters in Norway and Germany.

“Storage” of wind energy

Connecting Norwegian hydroelectric power with German wind power provides benefits for both countries. Whenever a surplus of wind energy is produced in Germany, for example, it can be transmitted via NordLink to Norway. The reservoirs in Norway then serve as natural storage for wind energy as the water remains in the reservoirs. Conversely, Germany can import hydroelectric power from Norway when demand is high. The HVDC interconnector will have a capacity of 1.400 megawatts (MW) and will be in-stalled between Tonstad, Norway, and Wilster (Schleswig-Holstein), Germany. NordLink is scheduled for commissioning and trial operation in Q4/2019, and after the trial period the interconnector will go into commercial operations in 2020. The interconnector com-prises a total investment volume of approximately EUR 1.5 - 2 billion Euro. Further information: http://www.tennet.eu/de/index.php?id=1146&L=2

German-Norwegian cooperation

NordLink will be realised by the Norwegian TSO Statnett SF and DC Nordseekabel GmbH & Co. KG, each with 50% ownership. TenneT TSO, and German promotional bank KfW both have shares of 50% in DC Nordseekabel. DC Nordseekabel is responsible for the construction of the German part of the project, including permits.
