Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

Study ranks TenneT among frontrunners in digital transformation

Downloads & Contact

A study of the 200 largest Dutch companies conducted by the Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad and Vlerick Business School has named TenneT as one of its top 10 ‘Transformers’, or leaders in the digital transformation. The other nine frontrunners include prominent Dutch companies like ING, Arcadis and Royal HaskoningDHV.

René Kerkmeester, Senior Manager Digital Transformation at TenneT, commented: “Our digitalization team has made an essential contribution to TenneT’s high ranking, and a well deserved compliment goes out to them. We are preparing our organization and the electricity market for a sustainable future, with a greater share of renewable energy sources and consequently also a more variable supply of solar and wind energy.”

Developing new insights

The energy transition entails a fundamental transformation in the operation of the electricity grid and the energy market. TenneT aims to promote energy-related innovations and develop new data-based insights. This will enable the organization to anticipate changes in good time and deal with them effectively.

For instance, TenneT is applying innovative blockchain solutions in pilot projects in the Netherlands and Germany to facilitate flexible access to local capacity. Electric vehicles can use the storage capacity of their batteries to help stabilize the high-voltage grid (i.e. maintain the balance between the supply of and demand for electricity). TenneT is also investigating if sensors in vehicles can be used to improve the accuracy of solar energy generation forecasts. Data registered by car sensors can provide real-time insight into weather conditions like fog, which can result in a short-term decrease in solar energy. TenneT then able to take prompt action to maintain the balance between supply and demand on the high-voltage grid.

About FD Transformers

FD Transformers is an annual survey conducted by Het Financieele Dagblad (FD) and Vlerick Business School. In this second edition, researchers evaluated the progress that the 200 largest Dutch companies have achieved in their digital transformation. Companies were grouped into several clusters based on their ‘digital preparedness’. The lead group consists of the ten companies that have devoted the most effort to digitalization across the board. TenneT has been ranked among these top-10 ‘Transformers’.

More information about the study and the rankings may be found on the FD Transformers 2018 website.
