The expected congestion is caused by the growth of solar and wind production in the grid of the regional grid operator (Liander) and TenneT. The resulting higher transmission demand cannot be fully facilitated due to the limited available transmission capacity in the high-voltage grid.
What is the contracted and available transmission capacity?
The congestion area concerns the 110 kV stations Gorredijk, Heerenveen, Herbayum, Leeuwarden, Lemmer, Louwsmeer, Marnezijl, Oosterwolde, Oudehaske, Rauwerd, Schenkenschans, Sneek and Wolvega. In the mentioned congestion area, the total contracted transmission capacity is about 1500 MW. The total available transmission capacity is approximately 980 MW. This capacity is completely forgiven in signed bids for contracted transmission capacity. There are no restrictions with regard to consumption.
The planning of the grid reinforcement
The structural solution consists of adjusting and reinforcing the Frisian 110 kV grid and increasing the 220/110 kV transformer capacity.
Research
TenneT is conducting research into the possibility of applying congestion management in the area mentioned above in accordance with the Grid Code Electricity article 9.5 section 5.
