Offshore Outlook 2050

Already by 2030, the originally planned capacity of 15 gigawatts of offshore wind energy will increase to 20 GW.

Electricity market

The energy sector is developing rapidly. The process of European market integration began some years ago. Its purpose is to create a single European market that enables market parties to trade gas and electricity across national borders easily and efficiently.

Transparency data

We provide transparency data on our operations on our Dutch and German transparency page and on ENTSO-E.

To transparency pages

Our vision is to be one of the most transparent Transmission System Operators (TSO) in Europe and thereby creating value for society. In this Energy Insights section we present selected energy related topics and show data, information and valuable insights.

Clean wind energy from the eastern North Sea

  • 130 km long and 690 MW capacity
  • 45 km onshore cable
  • 85 km offshore cable

Grid connection point

  • converter station Büttel

Status of project

  • in operation since June 2015

About the project

HelWin2 is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system with a capacity of 690 MW. This project is the third connection of TenneT in the eastern North Sea. The line runs from the HelWin beta converter station 85 kilometres as submarine cable to the landing point in Büsum and from there 45 kilometres as underground cable to the converter station in Büttel in Schleswig-Holstein.
The offshore converter platform HelWin beta is a subsidiary platform of HelWin alpha, the heart of the grid Connection HelWin1.
There are only about 20 metres between the two platforms. Both platforms are directly connected by a bridge. This means that the helicopter deck and the crew accommodation can be shared for the employees at sea. This is an innovative and cost-saving concept because it makes use of technical and logistical synergies.
