Our grid

TenneT manages the high-voltage grid in the Netherlands and large parts of Germany. TenneT transmits electricity at 110,000 volts (110 kV) and higher. With around 24,500 kilometres of high-voltage lines, we cross borders and connect countries.

Energy transition

Here you can find energy transition related Insights, data and facts on our Dutch and German grid area. As we continuously strive for more transparency and additional Energy Insights , further topics will be released in the upcoming period

Rethink the system

Wind turbines and solar panels are the physical signs of consumers’ growing desire for clean, renewable energy. In Germany and the Netherlands, traditional fossil fuel energy sources such as nuclear power and coal-fired power plants are being phased out, replaced by sustainable energy powered by wind and solar. This change known as the “energy transition”, or the "Energiewende" in Germany -  means that grid operators such TenneT need to completely rethink the system that delivers our power. 

Maintaining and expanding

Connecting  new power sources to our grid, bundling and transporting the electricity, is much more complicated than it used to be. To make sure we can maintain our track record of supplying power 99.99 % of the time, we need new, stronger power lines and more pylons and underground cables.  We are going to be investing more than ever in maintaining and expanding our high-voltage grid, while making sure this is done with minimum disruption to the environment and communities.

Digital technologies

Looking ahead, we will also be investing in digital technologies, including  a central “data hub” that can help to manage the many different ways we need to source  electricity. This will also help to make sure that all parties taking part in the energy supply business, including private persons, will have the same opportunities.  TenneT believes that investing in smart technology, as well as upgrading our physical grid, will help to make  society’s transition to renewable power both smooth and successful.
